Advent – Prophecy

Simple Definition: “Hope is the perception that something better is coming.”

Every dimension of our life originates, to some degree, on “hope”.

Everything seems to begin with hope.  

“Hope is the perception that something better is coming.”

H – Happiness
O – Opportunity
P – Perseverance
E – Eternity 

H – Happiness

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

All of Happiness seems to begin with the hope that something fun… something that will bring excitement… something that will bring joy or fulfillment might happen or is going to happen.  That is HOPE of Happiness.

Anticipation of something wonderful happening is sometimes as enjoyable as the actual event!  “The Anticipation of Happiness!”

O – Opportunity

Opportunity is an event, occupation or experience (something on our “bucket list”) that hasn’t yet been in our grasp.  It is founded on the hope that one day – preferably soon, you or I will have the opportunity to do something, or to be somebody that we have always wanted to do or be.  We haven’t accomplished it yet, but there is always hope that one day we will get our chance!

P – Perseverance 

Hope always carries with it the element of potential delay, but it keeps optimism about the unknown, which is to come.  The stability of perseverance though, can only be truly based on God’s Word – and God Himself, in the midst of a completely unstable world.

Nothing (other than God) – absolutely nothing in this world can give us complete certainty of its security and durability in our life.

We cannot be assured that anyone, or anything can or will endure indefinitely.

We can plan, save, and educate ourselves in every area in our life, but not one thing can have impregnable security. 
Position and Perseverance
Perseverance for the believer is founded on our “Position” with Christ.
If we are stable in our “faith” we have the opportunity to be steady in our perseverance!

Romans 5:1–2 
1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

Perseverance – those in the Old Testament saw the “hope” of the coming Messiah, but did not see the reality of His Coming.  

Hebrews 11:13–16 
13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. 

2 Thessalonians 3:5
5 May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance. 

2 Thessalonians 2:16 
16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope….
Oddly enough, Trials and Suffering allow us to be purified and Create an Atmosphere leading to Hope!
Romans 5:3-5 
3 Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. 
Perseverance and Eternity
2 Corinthians 4:7–9; 16-18 
7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. …
16 Therefore we do not lose heart (we have HOPE!). Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 

E – Eternity 

Because life will one day come to an end for all living souls, there is a necessity for every person to understand the reality of Eternity.  For those who simply hope in this life – in their own ability and the ability of those around them, there will one day be a huge disappointment.  Each person will stand before the Judgment of God.

For those who have found their Refuge in the cleansing Blood of Jesus Christ and have been Born Again by the power of the Holy Spirit, they anticipate release from this sin-cursed world and the privilege and blessing of eternally living and serving in the Everlasting Kingdom of God.

Romans 8:17–25 
17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. 
Hope of Future Glory 
18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19 The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. 
22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. 
The First Candle of Advent focuses on Prophecy
Prophecy, the Word of God, gives God’s Children Hope:
•	The Truth of God’s Word guides them to be honorable to God in their daily living,
•	They have confident hope in the certainty of their eternal home, for which they patiently await.

Where is your hope?  Hope is the Heritage for those who Believe in Jesus Christ!

Hope in the God of All Comfort 
2 Corinthians 1:3–11 
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. 5 For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. 6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.

Romans 10:13–17 
13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 
14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” 
16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?” 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. 
Galatians 5:3–7 
3 Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. 4 You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. 5 But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. 
7 You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth? 

Ephesians 1:16–23 
16 I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. 17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, 20 which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. 
Faith and Love Spring up from Eternal Hope
Colossians 1:3–5 
3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints— 5 the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel 

Colossians 1:26–27 
26 the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. 27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 

1 Thessalonians 2:19–20 
19 For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? 20 Indeed, you are our glory and joy. 

1 Timothy 4:7–10 
7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 
9 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance 10 (and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe. 

Titus 2:11–14 
11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. 
Hope of Eternal Life
Titus 3:1–11  
3	Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, 2 to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men. 
3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone. 
9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. 10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. 11 You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned. 

Hebrews 3:4–6 
4 For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. 5 Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house, testifying to what would be said in the future. 6 But Christ is faithful as a son over God’s house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast. 
Hebrews 6:9–12 
9 Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are confident of better things in your case—things that accompany salvation. 10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. 11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure. 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised. 
A Better Hope for Salvation than following Mosiac Law
Hebrews 7:18–19, 22
18 The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless 19 (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God…
22 Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant. 
A Call to Persevere 
Hebrews 10:19–23 
19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 
Praise to God for a Living Hope 
1 Peter 1:3–5 
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 

1 Peter 3:13–18 
13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened.” 15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17 It is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. 18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit….
The Godless have No Hope
Job 27:8–23 
8	For what hope has the godless when he is cut off, 
when God takes away his life? 
9	Does God listen to his cry when distress comes upon him? 
10	Will he find delight in the Almighty? Will he call upon God at all times? 
11	“I will teach you about the power of God; 
the ways of the Almighty I will not conceal. 
12	You have all seen this yourselves. Why then this meaningless talk? 
13	“Here is the fate God allots to the wicked, 
the heritage a ruthless man receives from the Almighty: 
14	However many his children, their fate is the sword; 
his offspring will never have enough to eat. 
15	The plague will bury those who survive him, 
and their widows will not weep for them. 
16	Though he heaps up silver like dust and clothes like piles of clay, 
17	what he lays up the righteous will wear, 
and the innocent will divide his silver. 
18	The house he builds is like a moth’s cocoon, like a hut made by a watchman. 
19	He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; 
when he opens his eyes, all is gone. 
20	Terrors overtake him like a flood; 
a tempest snatches him away in the night. 
21	The east wind carries him off, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place.

Job 13:15a
15	Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him… 
The Psalmist’s Hope
Psalm 42:11 
11	Why are you downcast, O my soul? 
Why so disturbed within me? 
Put your hope in God, 
for I will yet praise him, 
my Savior and my God. 
Psalm 119:81 
81	My soul faints with longing for your salvation, 
but I have put my hope in your word. 


Moses and the Hope of the Presence of the Lord 
Exodus 33:12–21 
12 Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favor with me.’ 13 If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.” 
14 The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” 
15 Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. 16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?” 
17 And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.” 
18 Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.” 
19 And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.” 
21 Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 
Drought, Famine, Sword – the Only Hope: God
Jeremiah 14 
14	This is the word of the Lord to Jeremiah concerning the drought: 
2	“Judah mourns, her cities languish; they wail for the land, 
and a cry goes up from Jerusalem. 
3	The nobles send their servants for water; 
they go to the cisterns but find no water. 
They return with their jars unfilled; 
dismayed and despairing, they cover their heads. 
4	The ground is cracked because there is no rain in the land; 
the farmers are dismayed and cover their heads. 
5	Even the doe in the field 
deserts her newborn fawn because there is no grass. 
6	Wild donkeys stand on the barren heights 
and pant like jackals; their eyesight fails for lack of pasture.” 
7	Although our sins testify against us, 
O Lord, do something for the sake of your name. 
For our backsliding is great; we have sinned against you. 
8	O Hope of Israel, its Savior in times of distress, 
why are you like a stranger in the land, 
like a traveler who stays only a night? 

9	Why are you like a man taken by surprise, like a warrior powerless to save? 
You are among us, O Lord, and we bear your name; do not forsake us! 
10 This is what the Lord says about this people: 
“They greatly love to wander; they do not restrain their feet. 
So the Lord does not accept them; he will now remember their wickedness 
and punish them for their sins.” 
11 Then the Lord said to me, “Do not pray for the well-being of this people. 12 Although they fast, I will not listen to their cry; though they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will destroy them with the sword, famine and plague.” 
13 But I said, “Ah, Sovereign Lord, the prophets keep telling them, ‘You will not see the sword or suffer famine. Indeed, I will give you lasting peace in this place.’ ” 
14 Then the Lord said to me, “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries and the delusions of their own minds. 15 Therefore, this is what the Lord says about the prophets who are prophesying in my name: I did not send them, yet they are saying, ‘No sword or famine will touch this land.’ Those same prophets will perish by sword and famine. 16 And the people they are prophesying to will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and sword. There will be no one to bury them or their wives, their sons or their daughters. I will pour out on them the calamity they deserve. 
17 “Speak this word to them: 
“ ‘Let my eyes overflow with tears night and day without ceasing; 
for my virgin daughter—my people— has suffered a grievous wound, 
a crushing blow. 
18	If I go into the country, I see those slain by the sword; 
if I go into the city, I see the ravages of famine. 
Both prophet and priest have gone to a land they know not.’ ” 
19	Have you rejected Judah completely? Do you despise Zion? 
Why have you afflicted us so that we cannot be healed? 
We hoped for peace but no good has come, 
for a time of healing but there is only terror. 
20	O Lord, we acknowledge our wickedness 
and the guilt of our fathers; we have indeed sinned against you. 
21	For the sake of your name do not despise us; 
do not dishonor your glorious throne. 
Remember your covenant with us and do not break it. 
22	Do any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain? 
Do the skies themselves send down showers? 
No, it is you, O Lord our God. Therefore our hope is in you, 
for you are the one who does all this.
