In Control

We live in a world, free-fall in space.  Flung into perpetual motion by unseen hands.  A massive, rotating sphere of fire, ice and vegetation kept on a precision course with an incomprehensible guidance system.

Floating...rushing through eternity, to eternity.  Turning, spinning, but somehow never out of control - not for one nanosecond.

We appear on this world’s surface.  We do not know where we came from or how we got there.  We build tiny shelters on this mass, huddle beneath their flimsy structure and say that we are safe.  We walk along the spherical edge of the earth and peer around us; we fly from one point to another, hovering or scurrying like little ants in agents of travel, on top, or just above the earth’s massive crust.

We connect with each other endlessly on complicated wireless cutting edge machines – unfortunately riddled with the complications and hackers.  Our most advanced systems would be thirsty to have just the fingerprint of the seemingly infinite, invisible and ancient frequencies, of super-communication wave-ways, brilliantly defined, and ingenious with codes that have existed before the dawn of mankind’s understanding!  We have a hard time believing the pre-mankind existence of these ultra-sophisticated mechanisms (including the extremely long codes of DNA directing every detail of our physical being). All of these phenomenal complexities surrounding us have existed in profound completeness – without the least amount of any person’s input!  In our continuing insolence and chosen deception, we still feel that we are indestructible geniuses who are in control of our own destiny!

We puff out our chest and declare that we are in control.  We all nod our heads to those around us and confidently affirm, “Yes, we know everything we need to know.  We are exponentially gaining knowledge.  We have no need of God.  We are in control!”

A friend who had nodded enthusiastically with us falls, mysteriously, and without any power to stop it, having been released from the spirit of life, to never breathe again.  Over and over throughout the years, the powerful, the brilliant, the noble, the rich, the talented, the poor, the beggar, and the unexceptional - everyone, without exception, on the crust of this world, one by one frailly and mysteriously falls down to his or her own death, never again to awaken in this life.  We tremble with the tremendous sadness of death, recall the best we can remember of their life, and sadly bury the hollow house of their bodies in the ground, scatter their ashes to the wind, or commit their remains to the sea.  Then we feebly look at each other to gather strength, and, as those who are left, nod reaffirmingly yet once again to each other, “Yes, we are in control!”

Our breath stops.  Our spirit is brought before the Living God who placed us on this awesome planet.  We must give an account to Him.

Who has been “in control” all along?

Three Problems:

1. Where did we come from?
Human beings have no original idea how we have come to be, even though we live in the glorious beauty of our planet and enjoy the profound sophistication of human life. This privileged, ultra-complicated and dynamic planet, according to our own extensive research, is exclusively alone in the vast cavernous, unlimited universe surrounding us. Because we are not certain where we have come from, we simply accept the fact that “I exist” and therefore, “I am”.

2. Who are we?
Human beings are uniquely depraved creatures who fight, are jealous of one another, want power, war to protect or gain benefit, and thus have a tendency to destroy one another. We humans are fragile creatures who live only a relatively short amount of time and whose spirit one day leaves each of their bodies. Our once profoundly complex physical homes, because of death, dissipate eventually into the dust of the ground. Our spirit goes somewhere else.

3. Whom do we worship?
•	 We tend to either make ourselves to be god;
• We make someone or something else to be our god; or,
• Because we cannot comprehend who we are, we conveniently and foolishly say, “There is no god”.

Who Is God – Who is the One whom we worship?

Anyone can make a claim to be god.
Most don’t claim something that is so difficult to fulfill unless they are lunatic.

Who, in the history of the world has claimed to be God – other than the mythical or demonic gods and goddesses that humans have fictionalized with their own imaginations, or through their own supernatural visions or experiences?

Can you recount one human being, other than Jesus Christ…who actually claimed to be God and who could even begin to confirm the possibility?

In our doctrinal statement we have several statements on who we believe Jesus Christ to be. Today we are going to look at some of these beliefs.

•	Jesus Christ’s amazing birth.
o He was born in the “fullness of time”, Galatians 4:4.
o He fulfilled the prophecy of One who would be born of a “virgin”, Isaiah 7:14.
o He was born supernaturally, without a human father, Luke 1:31-35.
o He was born in Bethlehem, as prophesied, Micah 5:2; Matthew 2:5-6.
o He was welcomed by a proclamation of a host of angels to shepherds, Luke 2:13.
o He was given gifts by kings from the east who came to worship Him, Matthew 2:1-16.
o He was protected from slaughter by jealous Herod, Matthew 2:13-18.

• Jesus Christ’s miraculous life.
o He performed many miraculous signs, Matthew 4:24.
o He discipled 12 men and taught thousands more.
o He forgives sins, Colossians 1:14.
  He forgave the sins of the adulterous woman, Luke 7:48;
  He forgave the sins of the paralytic man, Mark 2:5-7;

Luke 5:23-24
23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins…”

o He healed the sick.
Mt 8:13 pp Lk 7:10; Mt 8:15 pp Mk 1:31 pp Lk 4:39, Mt 9:22 pp Mk 5:29 pp Lk 8:44; Mt 9:29-30; 12:13 pp Mk 3:5 pp Lk 6:10; Mk 7:35; Lk 17:14; Jn 4:52-53; 5:8-9; 9:6-7

Matthew 4:24
23 And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. 24 So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, epileptics, and paralytics, and he healed them.

o	He raised the dead.
  The widow’s son, Luke 7:11-17
  The ruler’s daughter, Matthew 9:18-26
  Lazarus, John 11

o	He had power over and cast out evil spiritual forces - demons, Mk 1:34 pp Mt 8:16 pp Lk 4:41 See also Mt 9:33; 12:22 pp Lk 11:14; Mt 17:18 pp Mk 9:25-26 pp Lk 9:42.

o	He revealed His power over the natural forces in the world.
He turned water into wine, John 2:9
He walked on water, Matthew 17:27
He controlled the forces of nature, Matthew 8:27
He fed 5,000 with 5 loaves of bread and two fish, John 6:11-13

• Jesus Christ’s undeniable claim to be God.

o Jesus Christ was declared by God the Father, to be the Son of God.

You are my Son, today I have begotten you (Ps. 2:7; Acts 13:33; Heb. 1:5; Heb. 5:5); I will be to him a Father and he will be to me a Son (Heb. 1:5); this is my Son, my beloved (Matt. 3:17; Matt. 17:5; Mark 1:11; Mark 9:7; Luke 3:22; 2 Pet. 1:17); my Son, whom I have chosen (Luke 9:35); declared Son of God with power (Rom. 1:4); out of Egypt have I called my Son (Matt. 2:15); I will send my beloved son (Luke 20:13); of the Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God, is for ever’ (Heb. 1:8); God has borne witness to his Son (1 John 5:9); he has not believed the testimony that God bore to his Son (1 John 5:10).*

o Jesus Christ declared Himself to be Son of God.

Are you the Son of God? – I am (Luke 22:70); tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God (Matt. 26:63); are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? (Mark 14:61); I am the Son of God (John 10:36); he said ‘I am the Son of God’ (Matt. 27:43); he made himself out to be the Son of God (John 19:7); if you are the Son of God (Matt. 4:3; Matt. 4:6; Matt. 27:40; Luke 4:3; Luke 4:9); this illness is so that the Son of God may be glorified (John 11:4).*
John 14:9
9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

John 10:30
30 “I and the Father are one.”

o Jesus Christ was declared to be the Son of God by others

Son of God (Matt. 14:33; Mark 1:1; Luke 1:35; Heb. 4:14; Heb. 6:6; Heb. 7:3; Heb. 10:29; 1 John 3:8; Rev. 2:18); the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father (John 1:18); glory as of the only Son of the Father (John 1:14); God’s Son, according to the flesh descended from David (Rom. 1:3); I have seen and borne witness that this is the Son of God (John 1:34); Rabbi, you are the Son of God! (John 1:49); this was the Son of God! (Matt. 27:54; Mark 15:39); Son of the Most High God (Mark 5:7; Luke 1:32; Luke 8:28); we know that the Son of God has come (1 John 5:20); I believe you are the Christ, the Son of God (John 11:27); that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (John 20:31); who overcomes the world but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 John 5:5); he who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself (1 John 5:10); whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God (1 John 4:15); I live by faith in the Son of God (Gal. 2:20); the Son of God, Christ Jesus, whom we preached among you (2 Cor. 1:19); when God revealed his Son in me (Gal. 1:16); God has spoken to us by his Son (Heb. 1:2); though a Son, he learned obedience by what he suffered (Heb. 5:8); the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7); Christ is faithful as a Son over God’s house (Heb. 3:6); you are the Christ, the Son of the living God (Matt. 16:16); what have we in common, O Son of God? (Matt. 8:29); unclean spirits said, ‘You are the Son of God’ (Mark 3:11); demons came out of many, crying, ‘You are the Son of God!’ (Luke 4:41); our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son, Jesus Christ (1 John 1:3); in this the love of God was manifested, that he sent his Son (1 John 4:9); we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ (1 John 5:20).*

o Jesus Christ allowed others to worship Him.

We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him (Matt. 2:2); tell me that I may go and worship him (Matt. 2:8); they fell down and worshipped him (Matt. 2:11); they worshipped him (Matt. 14:33); they clasped his feet and worshipped him (Matt. 28:9); they worshipped him, but some doubted (Matt. 28:17); let all God’s angels worship him (Heb. 1:6); the man born blind worshipped Jesus (John 9:38).*
* from Collins Thesaurus of the Bible

o The Scripture evidences Jesus Christ, as the Lamb of God, to be worshipped as God, around God’s Throne.
Revelation 5:5–14
5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 He came and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song:
“You are worthy to take the scroll
and to open its seals, because you were slain,
and with your blood you purchased men for God
from every tribe and language and people and nation.
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.”
11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they sang:
“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”
13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing:
“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”
14 The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

• Jesus Christ’s Substitutionary Death

o Examples of Christ’s Humility
He left heaven’s glory.
John 17:5; 2 Cor. 8:9
He made himself of no reputation.
Phil. 2:7
He abstained from his omnipresence for a period.
John 11:14-15
He abstained from his omniscience for a period.
Mark 13:32; Luke 8:45-46
He abstained from his omnipotence for a period.
John 5:19-20
He was made in the likeness of men.
John 1:14; Rom. 1:3; Gal. 4:4; Heb. 2:14, 17
He humbled himself—that is, he submitted to authority.
1 Pet. 2:21-24
He became obedient unto death.
Matt. 26:39; John 10:18; Heb. 5:8; 12:2
He died on a cross for our sin.
Ps. 22; lsa. 53; Gal. 3:13
WBBL p. 169

o He was lied about, misrepresented and did not answer the trumped up charges unjustly leveled against Him at a trial that was a farce.
o Even the legal system that tried Him did not believe He had done anything wrong worthy of death.
o He was falsely condemned and crucified on a cross for our sins.
o All of nature recoiled upon His death.
Extreme darkness came across the land.
There was a tremendous earthquake that shook everything including the temple, and graves were opened.
The heavy veil of the temple keeping the Holy of Holies and Ark of the Covenant secluded was torn in two – opening it up for all to see.
o The price of sin was paid in full.

• Christ’s unparalleled resurrection.
o He rose on the third day, Matt. 28; Mark 16; Luke 24; John 20-21.
o He “led captivity captive” and gave gifts to men, Ephesians 4:8-14.
o He is “the firstborn from the dead”, Colossians 1:18.
o Hundreds saw Jesus Christ alive after His resurrection.

The ladies who came to anoint His body saw the empty tomb, the angles proclaiming His resurrection, and some saw the Risen Christ.
The guards were paid to not tell the fearsome story of His resurrection.
The disciples saw Him multiple times.
Those who had trouble believing in Him, changed their mind when they saw He had risen from the dead.

1 Corinthians 15:1–7
15 Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles….

o The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the single most important authentication of His Deity.

o He ascended into Heaven while many looked on, Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 16:14-20; Luke 24:50-53; Acts 1:6-11.

Conclusion

How can one authenticate worthiness to be worshipped?

1. The ability to create profoundly wonderful things (including living things), from nothing, John 1:1-3.
2. The authority and humility to allow personal creations the freedom to choose their own way and their own master, while sustaining His undeniable profound Sovereignty and requiring authentic accountability, Ezekiel 18; Ephesians 1; Romans 9; 1 Timothy 2:4.
3. The power to truly heal broken creations when they have chosen disastrous ways, Luke 4:16-21.
4. The reality of always being right and never being wrong – without immediately and outright destroying all who rebel against the Divine One’s will.
5. The wisdom to reveal One’s Divinity in such a way that the wielding of prideful elite power does not become the epitome and standard for One’s Kingdom.
6. The humility of giving Oneself as the sacrifice for the sin and rebellion of those fallen created.
7. The power to conquer rebellion against One’s own Person with love and the ultimate sacrifice.
8. The power to be resurrected from prophesied and chosen death.
9. The ability to create an eternal place of glorious wonder and blessing for those created and redeemed through One’s sacrifice.
Whom do we worship?

Jesus Christ is worthy of our worship!
