The Way that seems right

Where do we get information on how to live life?

Our Parents

Our Schools

Our Mentors…the “heroes” in society (lady gaga has the highest number of twitter followers!  Do we follow her?)

Newscasters in the Media

Could information we base our life on have flaws?  Could some of it be dead wrong?

Proverbs 14:12

“There is a way that seems right to a man,

but in the end it leads to death.”

Life’s complexities

The uniqueness of who each of us are.

The confusing diversity of people, cultures, and traditions all over the world.

The controversies within religions.

The controversies within the highest and most extolled forms of education.

The problems of suffering, hunger and death.

The complications of personal life.

The pain of different personalities, personal mistakes and inadequate problem solving.

The complexity of making the right decisions in finding the right way in life.

Is there a place to find the true information about life…that will not deceive me in the end?

Our Doctrinal Statement:

Our first point…

“We believe the Bible (God’s Holy Word) to be the Inspired, Infallible, Authoritative Word of God.”

Whatever we are as a church, and whatever we will be or will not be, is established on this primary, fundamental point.

Two Roads:

- The wide Road
- The Narrow Road

Matthew 7:13–14

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

God’s Word guides us to the narrow road

…And gives us continuing wisdom to keep honorably following God’s Path to Life

God's Word is Eternal

Since God’s Word is Eternal, we will have Eternal Benefits from following its Truth!

Psalm 119:89

Your word, O LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.

Isaiah 40:8

The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever."

Mark 13:31

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

Saving Faith is based on hearing and accepting God's Word

Romans 10:13-17

13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?” 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

God's Word transforms our minds

Romans 12:2

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is -- his good, pleasing and perfect will.

God's Word gives us hope

Romans 15:4

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

God's Word gives us much more insight and understanding than Worldly wisdom gained  from the world’s wide Road…

Psalm 119:97-100

Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me. I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes.  I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts.

Joshua 1:8

Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Psalm 19:7-11

The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous.

They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

Wisdom on the Narrow Road comes from The Word of God.

God Has Spoken to Us through His Word”

We are to diligently teach our children the Word of God
- God’s wisdom on the Narrow road

Deuteronomy 6:6-9

These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates.

Psalm 78:5-7

He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.

Remember, there are Two Roads in life:

- The Wide Road
- The Narrow Road

God’s Word gives us wisdom to follow that, which will benefit us, our family (and our Church) for eternity!

It is Irreplaceable!

Is God’s Word simply something we might listen to on Sunday morning and forget about the rest of the week?

Anytime, the Bible is the most excellent source for:

The Healthy Values

The Moral Guidelines

Godly Principles of Life

Foundational Truths on which we base our actions

The Guide to our Savior and Eternal Life!

God's Word will judge us in the end

John 12:48

There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day.

Stable principles from God’s Word, in the Bible, are all found as our Source of Wisdom for the Narrow Road that leads to Life.

They are not part of the foundational structures of “relativism” on the wide road”…that leads to destruction.

For whom does God reserve His  blessing?

Psalm 1:1-2

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates

day and night.

The Power of God’s Word

Psalm 12:6

And the words of the LORD are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace of clay, purified seven times.

Psalm 18:30

As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

How can an individual live pleasing to God?

When most everyone else is walking on the wide road…

Psalm 119:9

How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word.

Psalm 119:11

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

Heeding and Obeying God's Word brings security into our life

Matthew 7:24-25

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

Luke 6:48

He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.

Those on the wide road, hate the foundational Values of those on the narrow road…so, in actuality, the world hates God’s Word.

John 17:14  (from Jesus' prayer)

I have given them (those born into God’s Family) your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.

1 Corinthians 1:18

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

God's Word brings eternal life!
[Crossing over from the “wide road” – death, to the narrow road – life!]

John 5:24

"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.

John 6:63

The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.

John 8:32

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

Reviewing Life’s complexities

The uniqueness of who each of us are.

The confusing diversity of people, cultures, and traditions all over the world.

The controversies within religions.

The controversies within the highest and most extolled forms of education.

The problems of suffering, hunger and death.

The complications of personal life.

The pain of different personalities, personal mistakes and inadequate problem solving.

The complexity of making the right decisions in finding the right way in life.

How can we honorably deal with life’s complexities?

How do these things relate to “the Word of God”
in our life?

2 Peter 1:4

Through these He [God] has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

Mankind’s most critical broken relationship was with God Himself.

Through His Word, God’s revealed His Plan so sinful mankind could once again have a meaningful relationship with their Creator:

“But these are written that you may believe

that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,

and that by believing you may have life

Through His Name.”

John 20:31

…“To all who received Him,

to those who believed in His name,

He gave the right to become children of God!”

John 1:12

1 Peter 1:23-25

For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For, "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever." And this is the word that was preached to you.

James 1:21-24 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.   Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

Have you crossed over from life’s wide road to
The Narrow Road?

Then you have the privilege of having God’s Word to guide you and to give you God’s

Wisdom; and, the Presence of the Holy Spirit to direct you and give you Peace on the Narrow Road of Life!

The Word of God!

What place will God’s Word have in your life this week…next week and on…

The Word of God

The Word of God gives us clear directions on how we can live to the fullest in protection and blessing

The 10 Commandments establish the basis of God's Laws…for the human race

Exodus 20:1-17

1 And God spoke all these words: 2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

3 "You shall have no other gods before me.

4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

13 "You shall not murder.

14 "You shall not commit adultery.

15 "You shall not steal.

16 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

We are to diligently teach our children the Word of God

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates.

Deuteronomy 11:18-21

18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land that the LORD swore to give your forefathers, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.

Proverbs 6:20-23

20  My son, keep your father's commands and do not forsake your mother's teaching. 21  Bind them upon your heart forever; fasten them around your neck. 22  When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. 23  For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life,

- for his own kingdom

Deuteronomy 17:18, 19

When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the priests, who are Levites.  It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the LORD his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees

14 The Levites shall recite to all the people of Israel in a loud voice:

15 "Cursed is the man who carves an image or casts an idol -- a thing detestable to the LORD, the work of the craftsman's hands -- and sets it up in secret."

Then all the people shall say, "Amen!"

16 "Cursed is the man who dishonors his father or his mother."

Then all the people shall say, "Amen!"

22 "Cursed is the man who sleeps with his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother."

Then all the people shall say, "Amen!"

23 "Cursed is the man who sleeps with his mother-in-law."

Then all the people shall say, "Amen!"

24 "Cursed is the man who kills his neighbor secretly."

Then all the people shall say, "Amen!"

25 "Cursed is the man who accepts a bribe to kill an innocent person." Then all the people shall say, "Amen!"

Nehemiah 8:1-8

1 all the people assembled as one man in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded for Israel.

2 So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. 3 He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.

4 Ezra the scribe stood on a high wooden platform built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; and on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah,

Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam.

5 Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up. 6 Ezra praised the LORD, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded, "Amen! Amen!" Then they bowed down and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.

7 The Levites -- Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah -- instructed the people in the Law while the people were standing there. 8 They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people could understand what was being read.

People can harden their hearts to God's Word

Zechariah 7:12

The Parable of the Sower - Various ways the Word is received

Matthew 13:3-8

3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: "A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop -- a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.

The Explanation of the Parable of the Sower

Matthew 13:18-23

18 "Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. 22 The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. 23 But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown."

Tradition can nullify God's Word

Mark 7:9

And he said to them: "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!

Mark 7:13

Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that."

We can make mistakes by not knowing God's Word

Mark 12:24

Jesus replied, "Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?

Hearing the Word of God and obeying it, is necessary

Luke 11:28

He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it."

Miraculous events will not truly convince someone

who does not believe God's Word anyway

Luke 16:31

"He said to him, `If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'"

The Prophecies of God’s Word are Always Fulfilled

John 19:24

He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant -- not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

We should not distort the meaning of the Word of God by

deception or disobedience

2 Corinthians 4:2

Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

False teaching in the name of God's Word should be condemned

Galatians 1:8

But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!

1 Timothy 6:3-5

3 If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4 he is conceited and understands nothing. God's Word is not fabricated

Galatians 1:11-12

11 I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. 12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.

3 that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. 4 In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and prophets.

Colossians 1:26–27

26 the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. 27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

1 Peter 1:11, 12

11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. deep conviction and living obedience

The World rejects God’s Word

3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

God spoke His Word in various ways in the past,

but in these last days, God has spoken through His Son

1 In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.

Pay careful attention to God's Word so we do not drift away

or harden our hearts

Hebrews 2:1-3

1 We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2 For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3 how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.

Hebrews 3:7-8

7 So, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert,

Hebrews 4:2

For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.

The Word of God is piercing, penetrating and judging

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

1 Peter 1:23-25

23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For, "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, 25  but the word of the Lord stands forever." And this is the word that was preached to you.

We should humbly accept and obey God's Word

and reject the moral filth and evil around us.

James 1:21-24 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

One who listens and obeys God's Word will be blessed

James 1:25

But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it -- he will be blessed in what he does.

The unbeliever stumbles over the Word of God through disobedience

1 Peter 2:7-8

7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone," 8 and, "A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall." They stumble because they disobey the message -- which is also what they were destined for.

16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Peter 1:19-21

19 And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

2 Peter 3:2

I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.

17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever!  And I hold the keys of death and Hades. 19 "Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later.

Revelation 1:1-3

1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2 who testifies to everything he saw -- that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.

We need to stand up for the truth of the Word of God,

which has been entrusted for us

Do not add or subtract from God's Word

Revelation 22:18-19

18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. 19 And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. God will add to him the plagues described in this book.

But these are written that you may believe

That Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,

And that by believing you may have life

Through His Name.
