Advent
Today we light the first Advent Candle, in a Christmas tradition that points (for five consecutive weeks) toward the annual Christian celebration of the coming of Jesus Christ. This first candle represents “Prophecy”.

To the casual observer we may take the concept of “prophecy” as somewhat of a “hum-drum” or even unbelievable fantasy – after hearing the concept used, or misused, or even abused by the media, the movies, or by the self-made modern day false prophets or clairvoyants that can be seen failing to predict the future.

How trustworthy is any religion if their founder or holy book proclaims a future event to be true, and it fails to come to pass? Today some of the “best” fortunetellers or clairvoyants are touted as being great, if their “predictions” are 65% accurate. Would you want your eternal destiny to be based on the rambling teachings about God from someone who had a religious vision and whose movement was just over 50% accurate?

“Well,” the questionable religious leader might say, “You could go to heaven if you did thus and so…but then again, you still have a 50-50 chance you might go to hell…but I don’t really believe in hell, do you?”

I don’t think I want that kind of spiritual resource for my eternal destiny! Of course, I wouldn’t want that kind of person telling me from their writings that there is no heaven…or that there is no hell, either! I would want to have a resource for my faith that has been clearly proven to be 100% accurate.

Deuteronomy 18:20–22
20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.’ 21 And if you say in your heart, ‘How may we know the word that the Lord has not spoken?’— 22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You need not be afraid of him.

No Measurable Predictions – the Easiest Position for a False Teacher
If I were a self-made spiritual leader, and if I did not want to be proven inaccurate in my predictions, there is one thing I would do. I would not have any future predictive prophecies in my writings. That would be my safest bet. Then no one could check out my poor predictive percentages and undermine my false teaching to my face!

The Bible is Unique among “Holy Books” in being willing to be Prophetic
The Bible is the Only Religious Holy Book in the world that consistently includes predictive Prophetic Revelations, which can be precisely measured for their accuracy, to thus become open, transparent and accountable for all mankind to observe and test. This reveals the Voice of God. Holy men of God spoke these prophecies recorded in the Bible, as the Holy Spirit of God moved them (2 Peter 1:19-21).

2 Peter 1:19–21
19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

There are no predictive “prophecies” in the Koran of the Muslims.

There are no predictive “prophecies” in the Book of Mormon.

There are no predictive “prophecies” in the holy books of the Eastern Religions.

There are no predictive “prophecies” in any sacred, revered, or “holy” books that are in any way similar to the hundreds of predictive prophecies clearly declared and fully measurable in the Judeo-Christian Bible.

“Other books claim divine inspiration, such as the Koran, the Book of Mormon, and parts of the Veda. But none of those books contains predictive prophecy. As a result, fulfilled prophecy is a strong indication of the unique, divine authority of the Bible.”3

How do Biblical Prophecies Profoundly Affect the Life of The Christian?

• Prophecy proclaims the validity of the Scripture, which is the Source of the Christian’s Beliefs.

o If Biblical Scriptures were inaccurate, the inaccuracies would be observed immediately in the failure of predictive prophecies. Biblical Prophecies span thousands of years with 100% accuracy…we who live in these ages thousands of years after the original writing and prophecies of Scripture, have the luxury of seeing the fulfillment of a huge body of prophecies which were given in particular regard to the “suffering Savior” – the Messiah, Jesus Christ (see the endnotes in the Addendum). Generations following Christ’s first coming, up to the present, can fully attest to the accuracy of Biblical Prophecies’ fulfillment. The accuracy of past Biblical Prophecy’s proven record will lead any serious seeker of Truth, to believe the continuing accuracy of Biblical Prophecy, present and future.

• Prophecy prepares us for the future – these are events that we can expect to happen.

o The world may give us their presumptive predictions of the future, but God gives us the facts about the future.

•	Prophecy gives confidence in times of trouble and gives reason to catastrophic Events –

If God accurately predicts the future and has said He has a place prepared for us, then we can trust whatever happens to us into God’s Hands. We do not have to fear.

• Prophecy gives reason and purpose to continue on in honorable service to God – God’s Plans cannot be thwarted. Dedicated service to God has eternal value!

1 John 2:28
28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.

1 Corinthians 15:58
58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

Matthew 24:32–35
32 “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 34 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

• Prophecy gives certainty in the last days of an uncertain world.

o Is any student of the Bible surprised at Israel becoming a nation again in 1948 after the Jewish people had been dispersed into the ends of the earth for almost 2,000 years?

o Is any student of the Bible surprised when all eyes, these days, are on the Middle East – and Israel, in particular, including the growing hostility toward the Jewish Nation, when the Scripture reveals that Jerusalem, in the last days, will be surrounded by her enemies (Luke 21:20)?

Students of the Bible are aware of the prophecies regarding Israel and we watch with anticipation what God is going to do in these last days.

• Prophecy affirms that God has a plan for our future and the future of His Eternal Kingdom. This gives God’s Children Hope when all else is hopeless!

• Prophecy reveals the truth and falsehood of doctrinal teachings of religions that proclaim spiritual “revelation” but which do not contain measurable spiritual confirmation through prophecy (Deut. 18:20–22; 13:1-3).

Prophecy is God’s Way of Revealing Himself…Again
In order to reveal the reality and certainty of Himself to mankind, in addition to the revelation of Himself through Creation all around us, God established supernatural statements, through His prophets, for the foretelling of future events.

God looked across the span of time and in His mind established His plan…before the beginning of the world. He has shared that plan with mankind, through His prophets and through His Word, the Bible, so that we would be aware of the certainty of His Presence and the reality of how He is pursuing His relationship with us, and what He plans on doing in the Future.

Through Prophecy God has shared at least four Truths:

1. His Plan for a Savior – a Messiah, who would redeem us from our sins.
2. His Plan for a Chosen People to bring His Redeemer into the world and establish a Name for Himself.
3. His Plan to prepare a chosen Bride for Himself from every nation, race, language and tribe in the history of the world.
4. His Plan to prepare an Eternal Kingdom and a Home for Himself and for His Bride.

The Plan
His was a plan to bring to Himself a Bride, not of those whom He created as angelic beings, but from those created in His own Image, who would of His own choosing and the choosing of those whom He created, to mysteriously and uniquely become one with Himself.

God gave glimpses of His plan throughout the multiple thousand-year spans of time in the writing of the Old and New Testaments. These glimpses or “prophecies” were for those who were seeking to know God’s mind, and understand His purpose throughout the ages.

The Pain
This Plan of the Ages would not be without excruciating pain – even the death of His Son. But as painful as that would be for Himself and for His chosen Bride, in those deep valleys and profound trials, the amazing eternal reward would be so wonderful as to not even be compared to that which had previously been experienced on earth.

The Revelation of the Plan through Prophecy was not revealed all at the same time, but revealed incrementally, each part in “the fullness of time” so that the plan could not be manipulated by His enemy, Satan (1 Cor. 2:6-8), or be outside His will. His plan was revealed enough so God’s Children would understand what He was doing, have the endurance they needed and remember the Eternal Reward, which they would be receiving.

God’s Truth is Secure in a world where Anyone Can Predict Anything!
When God gives a Prophecy to His servants it will come to pass… nothing can stop it.

Prophecy Reviewed
• God, through the Prophetic Word proclaims events to come, declared sometimes hundreds or even thousands of years before their fulfillment.
• Add to those prophecies the requirement that all such prophecies from God be fulfilled with 100% accuracy and the world is given a book with certainty and stability Deut. 18:21,22; 13:1-3; Jer. 28:9. God draws a strong line when anyone’s presumptuous “prophecy” fails. That person is revealed to not be from God.
• God, through Prophecy speaks about His Chosen People. Within the Bible there are many prophecies and fulfillments regarding Abraham and the Jewish nation. There are also a large number of prophecies regarding the nations surrounding Israel, which affected, for evil or good, the Jewish people.
• The greatest body of Prophecies within the Bible relate to the coming of the Messiah, His Redemptive Sacrifice and His eternal Kingdom. (See endnotes.)
• There were many prophecies from the Old Testament, fulfilled in the New Testament, whose fulfillment have been complete and cannot be denied.
• Jesus and His disciples also had numerous prophetic statements, many of which, relate to the “end of the age”, and are yet to be fulfilled.
These prophecies in the Bible were not proclaimed in vague “Edgar Cayce type” sentences, or filled with mystic incantations or cloaked with multiple-meanings to give any possibility of diverse fulfillment (or provide an easy cover-up of failure).
Biblical prophecies were given in specific, undeniable detail, such as, “for my clothing they cast lots” [Cited from Ps. 22:18, fulfilled in John 19:24] “not one of his bones will be broken,” [Cited from Ex. 12:46; Ps. 34:20; Num. 9:12; (1 Cor. 5:7), fulfilled in John 19:36]. “They will look on him whom they have pierced,” [Cited from Zech. 12:10; [Rev. 1:7], fulfilled in John 19:37]. Jesus prophesied that not one stone of the temple would be left upon another (Matt. 24:1,2). The destruction of the temple in 70 AD was so devastating by the Roman conqueror Titus, that Jesus prophecy was fulfilled to the letter. Prophecies by the Old Testament prophets concerning world rulers who would rise (such as in Daniel 7-12), and the many prophecies of the major and minor prophets were specifically fulfilled – or will be fulfilled, if they related to future events.

The Prophetic Word

And we have something more sure, the prophetic word,
to which you will do well to pay attention
as to a lamp shining in a dark place,
until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,
knowing this first of all,
that no prophecy of Scripture comes
from someone’s own interpretation.
For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man,
but men spoke from God as they were carried along
by the Holy Spirit.
2 Peter 1:19-21

Remember these familiar Prophecies of Christ’s Coming as the Messiah?

Isaiah 7:14
14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Micah 5:2
2 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.

Isaiah 53:1–6
1 Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 For he grew up before him like a young plant,
and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Isaiah 9:6–7
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will
be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to
establish it and to uphold it with justice and with
righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal
of the Lord of hosts will do this.
