Scripture Reading:

John 4:4–14

4 Now he (Jesus) had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” 11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?” 13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

In initiating the conversation with the Samaritan Woman Jesus crossed Two Cultural Divides, which the Samaritan woman pointed out:

“You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?”

·      Jesus was Jewish (the Samaritans were considered to be unclean to the Jews – they wouldn’t talk to them.)

·      Jesus was a man (it was not “kosher” for Jewish men to speak with women they did not know…especially, a Samaritan woman.)

After the woman’s brash response, Jesus links His earlier request to a Spiritual topic – Her relationship with God:

John 4:10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.”

“If you but knew…”

·      Absolute Comprehension:  Realizing the “Enormous Treasure” of the “Gift of God.”

“If you knew the gift of God.”

·      The Messiah Himself:  Who it is she is speaking with.

“If you knew Who it is that asks you for a drink.”

·      Who should have taken the Initiative?:  If she had known, the initiative of this conversation would have first been taken by her. (Later – “He told me all that I ever did…can this be The Christ?”)

“If you knew, you would have asked Him.”

·      “Living Water”:  Jesus ability to give “Living Water.”

“If you knew, He would have given you Living Water.”

Water

Water covers 71% of the world

Properties of Water

The water content of each human body is around 60-70%.

“Most people aren't aware that the body is only one or two percentage points away from a problem.”

The Quest for Hydration

"The body needs water for millions of metabolic processes, temperature control, fluid volume, and lubrication…” - Hall

“Without it [water] , the body begins to shut down... Symptoms of severe dehydration include altered behavior, such as severe anxiety, confusion, or not being able to stay awake; faintness that is not relieved by lying down; an inability to stand or walk; rapid breathing; a weak, rapid pulse; and loss of consciousness.[1]

Three Critical Aspects of Water

1.  Fluid Hydration:  To function properly, the body requires between one and seven liters of water per day to avoid dehydration, (the body requires more input of liquid hydration than is expended through work, exercise or elimination).

We become “thirsty” if we do not drink enough water.  Athletes and marathon runners must drink even before their body tells them that they are thirsty or they will become dehydrated.

2.  Metabolism Solvent:  Water allows food, minerals and life-giving substances to dissolve and be transported through our bloodstream to feed each cell of our body every day.

·      Metabolism – the interaction of millions of life-sustaining chemical reactions in our body.

o   The three main purposes of metabolism are:

1. Energy:  the conversion of food for life-giving daily energy

2. Growth:  the long-term stability and incremental growth of our body and mind

3. Waste:  the elimination of wastes.[2]

  1. 3. Constant Temperature:  Our temperature remains constant because our bodies are composed of so much water.

·      Helps maintain constant body temperatures

o   Even athletes running or playing very hard do not have much change in temperature because of the large water content in our bodies and adjust with incremental temperature changes.

o   If our body temperature rises too much it means we are sick – consistency in body temperature is vital to our good health

o   Water evaporation keeps us cool – sweating

o   Circulatory system of the blood throughout the body is similar to the cooling radiator system in a vehicle…the body is kept close to the 98.6-degree norm.  It only goes up if the body begins fighting infection.  It is interesting that everyone in the world has approximately the same body temperature, for optimal function the way God created the body from the beginning.

What is the “Living Water” that Jesus spoke about to the woman at the well?

Do we know what “Living Water” Is?

Do believers in Christ experience “Living Water” right now?

The “Water of Life” is The Holy Spirit

John 14:15–17

15 “If you love me (Jesus said), you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

John 7:37–39

37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified

At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came to dwell in believers in Jesus Christ and transform them through New Birth!  (see John 3 Nicodemus – You must be “born again!”)

1.  Spiritual Hydration:  Daily Empowerment by the Holy Spirit:

Ephesians 5:17–18

17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be [being] filled with the Spirit…

Ephesians 3:17–19

17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God

John 16:13–14

13 When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for He will take what is mine and declare it to you.

The mystery of the Trinity and Salvation (for all who believe) through faith in the Redeeming, Risen Christ and New Birth with Transformation through the indwelling Holy Spirit.

Colossians 1:27

27 … this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Romans 8:9

9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

Colossians 2:9–10

9 For in him (Jesus Christ) the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.

To spiritually function properly, our spiritual life requires “spiritual hydration” every day, or we become spiritually thirsty, and, if our spirit is not being renewed, we become spiritually dehydrated…and our spiritual life becomes weak and sick, incapable of worshipping or serving the Lord as we should.  We feel guilty and terrible at first.  We play into the enemy’s hand.  We become unconscious regarding the Kingdom of God.  We serve ourselves…and unless we wake up, we risk being severely Judged by God, and lose the reward which had been laid up for us.

2.  Spiritual Metabolism:

Storing God’s Word in our Hearts

Psalm 119:9–11

9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. 10 With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! 11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

Meditating on God’s Word

Joshua 1:8

8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Communing with God in Prayer

Philippians 4:6–7

6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Fellowshipping with those who love God

Hebrews 10:24–25

24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Responding to others in a Godly way

Colossians 3:12–16

12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

The three main purposes of Spiritual Metabolism are:

1. Spiritual Energy:  the conversion of spiritual food for life-giving daily spiritual energy.

2. Spiritual Growth:  the long-term stability and spiritually maturing growth of our body, soul and spirit.

3. Spiritual Conviction/Repentance, turning away and “Putting off” sin:  the elimination of spiritually toxic wastes.

Ephesians 4:22–24

22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

Colossians 3:8–10

8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.

Spiritual Constant Temperature:  Our Spiritual temperature remains constant because our Spirits are healthily immersed in the understanding of God’s Word.

Ephesians 4:11–15

11 And He gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into Him who is the head, into Christ….

2 Corinthians 4:16–18

16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

As with the Woman at the Well…

“If you knew the amazing gift of God.”

“If you knew Who it Is that asks you for a drink.”

“If you knew, He would have given you Living Water.”

“If we only knew what Eternity held.”

In What Parable Does Someone wanted Only Drops of Cool Water?

Luke 16:22–24; 27–31

22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried, 23and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’

(If, because of the “great gulf” between, this cannot happen…)

27 … ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house— 28 for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’ ”

The Final Call to Come to the Spring of The Water of Life

Revelation 21:6

6 And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.

Revelation 22:17

17 The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.

Come to Jesus Christ for the Living Water of Eternal Life through Salvation in His Redemption and Forgiveness, with Transformation and Empowerment by His Holy Spirit.

Then Come Every Day through Spending time in His Word, Communing in Prayer to God, Fellowship with others, Growing in Grace and Spiritual Maturity in the Lord.

ENDNOTES

General Aspects of Water [gleaned from a variety of educational sources]

·      Water is a “polar” molecule

“The water molecule is electrically neutral, but the asymmetric arrangement of the hydrogen atoms on the oxygen atom gives it a net positive charge on one side and a negative charge on the other. Among the important consequences for living organisms are water's ability to dissolve a variety of substances, more than any other liquid, and its strong surface tension, which allows it to form drops and to travel through tiny roots, stems and capillaries.”[3]

·      Water is a good solvent (a “Universal Solvent”[4] – water dissolves many substances

o   Blood, plasma (watery part), white blood cells and platelets, and red blood cells

o   Carbs, proteins, sugar

o   Solutions, where one substance dissolves into another substance

o   Ph scale – the amount of hydrogen ions that the solution contains

·      Cohesion (allows water to stick together with water) and Adhesion (the ability to cling to surfaces other than water) – it allows for the transport of nutrients and waste to be transported through the internal system of the plant, animal or person

o   Transpiration – water rises to reach every part of the plant or tree and its evaporation through the aerial parts (the stomates of leaves)

·      High Surface Tension – water molecules on the surface of water cling more tightly to themselves than to the air above the water

·      High heat capacity – it can absorb a lot of heat without changing its chemical state (i.e. from liquid to gas)

o   Water resists temperature change

§  Much energy is needed to break water bonds to make water hot and cause steam to rise

o   Helps maintain constant body temperatures

§  Even athletes running or playing very hard do not have much change in temperature because of the large water content in our bodies.

§  If our body temperature rises too much it means we are sick – consistency in body temperature is vital to our good health

o   Helps stabilizes the temperatures of large bodies of water and temperatures of living organism within the water can maintain living temperatures or adjust to incremental temperature changes

o   Water evaporation keeps us cool – sweating

·      Metabolism – the set of life-sustaining chemical reactions in our body.

o   The three main purposes of metabolism are: 1. the conversion of food to energy to run cellular processes; 2. the conversion of food/fuel to building blocks for proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and some carbohydrates; and 3. the elimination of nitrogenous wastes. – Wikipedia

o   All material in you is mixed with water and can be transported throughout your body…or through the plant or animal.

·      Changes in density – the density of water is based on its temperature

o   Ice Floats or it would sink.  Ponds and lakes would freeze solid, making life there impossible

o   Ice floats on water rather than crushing things under the water.  Solidly freezing the whole lake or pond.

o   Water always freezes from the top down allowing the frozen water on top to act as an insulator for the water below.

·      All living cells use such fuels and oxidize the hydrogen and carbon to capture the sun's energy and reform water and CO2 in the process (cellular respiration)

·      Hydration…(see above in the body of the message)[5]
