A Communion Service at Home

This is the Sunday when we ordinarily have Communion together.  Have you ever experienced a Communion service by yourself, with another friend, or with your family?  Sometimes through the years when we have been at special Spiritual retreats, we were given the opportunity to be alone and experience a quiet, meditative communion service just between ourselves and the Lord.  Today is a Sunday when many of us have the privilege of experiencing a personal Communion Service with the Lord.

Here are some options to have Communion at home:

1. Having communion with the head of each home leading the service.

2. Choosing to have a private service with just you and the Lord.

3. Choosing to join with a neighbor or other family close by.

4. Choosing to call someone and share the service over the phone.

Beforehand:

·      Prepare some bread/crackers/other unleavened bread to use for communion bread symbolic of Christ the Bread of Life, whose Body was broken by death on our behalf.

·      Prepare whatever juice you may have available, to use symbolically to represent the blood of Jesus, poured out for our sin on the cross. The sacrifice of His blood cleanses us from sin.

~ Crown Him with many crowns,

The Lamb upon His Throne,

Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns

All music but its own.

Awake, my soul, and sing

Of Him who died for thee,

And hail Him as thy matchless King

Through all eternity.

~ Crown Him the Son of God;

Before the worlds began,

And ye, who tread where He hath trod,

Crown Him the Son of Man!

Who every grief hath known,

That wrings the human breast,

And takes and bears them for His own

That all in Him may rest!

Crown Him the Lord of Love!

Behold His hands and side,

Those wounds, yet visible above,

In beauty glorified:

No angel in the sky,

Can fully bear that sight,

But downward bends his wandering eye,

At mysterious so bright!

~ Crown Him the Lord of Life

That triumphed o’er the grave,

And rose victorious in the strife,

For those He came to save;

His glories now we sing,

Who died and rose on high.

Who died, eternal life to bring,

And lives that death may die!

Crown Him the Lord of lords;

Who over all doeth reign!

Who once on earth, the Incarnate Word,

For ransomed sinners slain,

Now lives in realms of light

Where saints with angels sing,

Their songs before Him day and night,

Their God, Redeemer, King!

~ (I could not find or hear clearly the words to the last verse sung by the Cambrensis choir and orchestra, so just enjoy the music and what you understand, in worship to the Lord!)

·      10,000 Reasons (Music special with lyrics on-screen:  Matt Redman)

Matthew 27:27–31 (Leader read, or choose a reader)

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

  1.   The Power of the Cross  Special with lyrics on-screen (Keith & Kristyn Getty

Communion Scripture – Leader reads or appoints someone to read

1 Corinthians 11:23–32

23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. 31 But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. 32 When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.

Leader: Please join in praying the Lord’s Prayer together, or leader pray.

 “The Lord’s Prayer”

Our Father, which art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy Name.

Thy Kingdom come.

Thy will be done on earth,

As it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive those that trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

For Thine is The Kingdom,

The power, and The Glory,

For Ever and Ever.

Amen.

·      “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us” (Fernando Ortega – with lyrics on-screen)

Matthew 27:32–44

The Crucifixion

32 As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 36 And sitting down, they kept watch over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews. 38 Two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”

41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” 44 In the same way the robbers who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

·      “Oh the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus”  (special – Selah [trio], lyrics on-screen)

Communion:

1.  Christ, the Bread of Life

Offer a personal Prayer of Thanksgiving for Christ’s body broken for us on the Cross

John 6:35

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

·      “The Old Rugged Cross”  (Alan Jackson – Country, with lyrics on-screen)

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,

The emblem of suffering and shame;

And I love that old cross where the dearest and best

For a world of lost sinners was slain.

Refrain

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,

Till my trophies at last I lay down;

I will cling to the old rugged cross,

And exchange it some day for a crown.

To the old rugged cross, I will ever be true;

Its shame and reproach gladly bear;

Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away,

Where His glory forever I’ll share.

(Refrain)

Offer a personal prayer – Thanking God for the Broken Body of Christ, and Partaking of the Bread

Leader:  “Take Eat, this is my Body which is broken for you,” take ye all of it.

The Death of Jesus

Matthew 27:45–54

45 From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. 46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”—which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”

48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”

Luke 23:46

46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.

Matthew 27:51–54

51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. 52 The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus’ resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”

·      In Christ Alone | Celtic Worship  (special - Steph Macleod Band)

·      “There Is a Fountain”  (Selah – lyrics on-screen)

There is a fountain filled with blood

drawn from Emmanuel’s veins;

And sinners plunged beneath that flood

lose all their guilty stains.

Lose all their guilty stains,

lose all their guilty stains;

And sinners plunged beneath that flood

lose all their guilty stains.

The dying thief rejoiced to see

that fountain in his day;

And there may I, though vile as he,

washed all my sins away.

Washed all my sins away,

washed all my sins away;

And there may I, though vile as he,

washed all my sins away.

E’er since, by faith, I saw the stream

Thy flowing wounds supply,

Redeeming love has been my theme,

and shall be till I die.

And shall be till I die,

and shall be till I die;

Redeeming love has been my theme,

and shall be till I die.

The One Pierced - John 19:31–37

31 Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. 35 The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,” 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”

·      “Amazing Grace”

(Lyrics only on-screen, sung by Susan Boyle)

    Amazing grace, how sweet the sound

    That saved a wretch like me

    I once was lost, but now I’m found

    Was blind but now I see

    Through many dangers, toils and snares

    I have already come

    ‘Twas grace that brought me safe this far

    And grace will lead me home

    When we’ve been there ten thousand years

    Bright-shining as the sun

    We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise

    Than when we first begun

    Amazing grace, how sweet the sound

    That saved a wretch like me

    I once was lost, but now I’m found

    Was blind but now I see

2.  The Cup:  Christ’s Blood of the New Covenant for the forgiveness of sins

Luke 22:20

20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”

Matthew 26:28

28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

·      Jesus Paid It All  (Fernando Ortega – with lyrics on-screen)

I hear the Savior say,

“Thy strength indeed is small;

Child of weakness, watch and pray,

Find in Me thine all in all.”

(Refrain)

Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe;

Sin had left a crimson stain,

He washed it white as snow.

Lord, indeed I find,

Thy power and Thine alone;

Can change the leper’s spots

And melt the heart of stone.

(Refrain)

For nothing good have I,

Whereby Thy Grace to claim;

I’ll wash my garments white,

In the Blood of Calv’ry Lamb.

(Refrain)

And when before The Throne

I stand in Him complete;

Jesus died my soul to save,

My lips shall still repeat.

(Refrain)

Prayer – Thanking God for the Blood of Christ, and Partaking of the Cup

Leader:  “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins,” take ye all of it.

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the One who Redeems and Justifies us by His Blood, broke the power of sin and death, and rose again to give each of His Children the hope of Eternal Life.

Matthew 28:1–7

The Resurrection

28 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen
